Diploma in Community Health

Background and Justification

Underdeveloped countries experience serious problems of qualified human resources in general and particularly in the health sector. In accordance with the World Health Organization’s standards, there should be a rate of 2000 inhabitants per nurse and one medical doctor for 10,000 inhabitants.

In some parts of the country, there is an acute shortage of health personnel. Various policies are implemented in order to try to find a solution to those endemic problems. In accordance with government policies for higher learning, some categories have been classified in the area of postsecondary education leading to a diploma for an A1 senior technician. This category is found among pupils who have not obtained 50% after passing the State Exam. INUCI seeks to offer a post secondary training in nursing and community health.

For nurses, this is a two year program:

  • 1st year: theoretical courses
  • 2nd year: 50% of learning dedicated to theoretical courses whereas the remaining 50% are reserved for internship in hospitals and writing an internship report that should be approved by the Institute.

For Community Health, this is a two years training. The objective is to train professionals in community health. This program is primarily motivated by environmental and community needs and problems.

  • 1st year: theoretical courses
  • 2nd year: 50% of learning dedicated to theoretical courses whereas the remaining 50% are reserved for internship in hospitals and writing an internship report that should be approved by the Institute.

Both programs recruit pupils who have finished technical high school under paramedical schools. At the end of their academic curriculum,

  • Candidates from the Community Health major will be able to identify and resolve community health problems that affect the community. They will earn a qualification in accordance with their curriculum: Diploma (Senior Technician in Community Health).
  • Candidates from the nursing major will develop skills and abilities to deliver quality health services in hospital and non-hospital environments. They will also earn a Diploma (Senior Technician in Nursing).
